Bilbao Port (Autoridad Portuaria de Bilbao), the Port of Bilbao, is on the eastern side of the Bay of Biscay and in a central situation of the European Atlantic face. This privileged geographic location allows the Port to act as a link with the main international ports and it has especially good connections with both the American continent and the north of Europe. Over 200 regular maritime services link Bilbao with 500 ports worldwide.

The Port meets the highest operational capacity requirements. All classes of cargo and vessels can be received in a port that is operative 24 hours a day, every day throughout the year and that presents no problems with draughts or tides.

The Port has 32–metre depths at some points, which allow the greatest vessels to berth: what stands out among its facilities are the 17 km of wharves and the ample cargo storage space housing more than 250,000 m² of covered storage surface, 30,000 m² of bonded warehouses, and 25,300 m² of cold storage.

The facilities are located on more than 313 hectares of land surface and almost 1,700 hectares of surfaces in all. There are specialized terminals for the following cargoes and traffics: general, container, liquid and solid bulks, fruit and vegetable cargo, and motor vehicles. Therefore, the Port of Bilbao’s ample maritime services offer facilitates access to the international markets.

It was jointly established by the central State administration through public companies (SEPES, the Public Business Organization for Land attached to the Housing Ministry; the Port Authority of Bilbao; Adif and Feve public railway companies), and the Basque administration (the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, and Bilbao and Barakaldo City Councils). Its mission was to recover impoverished areas or industrial zones in decline in metropolitan Bilbao. To do this, it had to coordinate andexecute projects that integrated urban planning, transport and the environment. It is currently working on the following projects: Abandoibarra, Ametzola, the Southern Railway Line, Barakaldo, Bilbao La Vieja, Basurto-San Mamés-Olabeaga, Basauri and various rail infrastructures.

BILBAO Ría 2000 was founded with a capital of 1.8 million euros. From that point on, thecompany has shown a strong ability to maintain financial equilibrium without having to resort to public funds. This has been made possible by shareholders ceding the land they own in central Bilbao and Barakaldo, following which, the City Council modifies its legal planning status. BILBAO Ría 2000 invests in the urbanisation of the plots and sells them to private developers, thus obtaining a profit, which it reinvests in areas that are important for the city, eg, the southern railway line, Bilbao La Vieja, and Basurto-San Mamés-Olabeaga. BILBAO Ría 2000 also receives subsidies from the European Union.
