Bilboko Kalealdia 2011, Festival de Teatro y Artes de Calle

The Festival of Street Theatre and Arts – Bilboko Kalealdia will celebrate its twelfth edition, from July 4th to 9th, and will do so with an exceptional quality programm, which has brought together innovative proposals from some of the most important companies on the international scene.

21 companies of street arts, from France, Belgium and England, as well as Andalusia, Catalonia, Galicia and Madrid and the Basques En la Lona, Ganso & Cia, Markeliñe and Gaztedi dantzari Taldea will offer their latest productions in Bilbao, which go from street gangs roaming music, vertical dance, to street theater or the circus disciplines, such as clowning, aerial acrobatics or big mobile structures.

Organized by the Culture and Education of the City Council of Bilbao, Bilboko Kalealdia has had this year in collaboration with the French Institute, to support the presence of Generik Vapeur, with its spectacular and thunderous parade of blue men “Bivouac”, along the Gran Via, between the Moyua Square and the Arriaga Theater, on July 7th, at 21:30 hours.

Another of the shows, which will draw special attention of the public, will be held at the facade of the main building of BBVA, at the Abando Square, by the Catalan company Delrevés, which will offer on July 7th and 8th, the latest performance of vertical dance “Repite conmigo”. In addition, the week includes events for all ages, characterized by the humor, the fantasy, the color and the light, with urban dance within a tubular structure, outdoor circus, a number with the dog Bébert or a skilled artist who makes portraits with paper cutouts, all proposals to enjoy the performing arts in the street

The festival will start on July 4th (from 19.15 to 21.00 hours) for the first time, with a proposal created by the traditional dance group from the neighborhood of Santutxu, Gaztedi dantzari Taldea especially for the festival. Txangoan is a show that invites you to take a tour through the folklore of the Basque Country, with the help of characters that run various corners of the Casco Viejo. This route starts at the Ribera Market, but goes up to the Arenal, where about 200 dancers are invited to dance the Larrain Dantza, a participatory show that will help to kick off the Bilboko Kalealdia 2011.

On July 5th, It will truly start the festival, with six shows that will happen between 17.30 and 22.30 hours in the scenarios provided in the environment of the Provincial Palace, the Arenal and the Arriaga Square. As usual, a street band will open the schedule, Million Dollar Mercede$ Band, with its different rhythms to take fun along the Gran Vía But this day, it highlights the contemporary circus show Until now by the British company Mimbre (Arriaga Sq., 22.30 hours), with an acrobatic show with a touch of magic. That same day, the public from Bilbao may enjoy the work of the French clown Les Cousins (Bébert et Lolo), which includes in the show their dog called Bébert.

The schedule on Wednesday, July 6th, includes the presentation in Bilbao of the show “Exodo” of Basque company En la Lona (Arenal, 21.30 hours), which merges techniques of theater, dance, circus and physical theater. “Exodo” is a multicultural show of great visual impact, that through the dance, fire, acrobatics, ritual and Physical Theatre invites the public to reflect on those displaced for reasons related to the climate change.

On Thursday, July 7th, Bilboko Kalealdia has reserved what will surely be the most spectacular proposals of the festival. The show will start at 18.00 hours in the Arenal´s dock, with the Belgians Circlou and the Galician company of contemporary circus Lusco e Fusco, but it will be at 21.30 hours when it will start the traveling music show “Bivouac” of the prestigious French company Generik Vapeur. This music and street theater company brings together a dozen artists and technicians around the world with the aim of changing the urban landscape of the city.

On Friday, July 8th, the stage proposals include two shows by two well-known local performing arts companies. The clown Ganso & Cia will present his show Mediopelo in the San Nicolas area, and at night, Markeliñe will premiere its show Alterazio magnetikoa, starting at 23.00 hours in the Arriaga Square. Markeliñe is a group that offers original creations, imaginative and surprising.

In addition, this day includes three passes of the show “Underground” of the English Motionhouse. This company has been producing impressive physical and visual performances since 1988, critically acclaimed proposals that have become theater and dance successes. This years festival will close on Saturday, July 9th, with five different shows, among which include the show in the Arenal´s Pier (19.00 and 21.30 hours) of the French Les Philébulistes, with the show “Arcane” in involving two rotation-defying stunt in two aluminum wheels of five meters of diameter linked by a central axis.
